» The High Strung Rock Gitmo
It would be crazy enough if there was any mention of the High Strung in Vanity Fair — but the fact that this is an article detailing their trip to play shows for the Gitmo troops makes this among the most crazed things you’ll read all day. Maybe tomorrow too.
Also, the author, the brother of HS drummer Derek Berk wrote this. Which is awesome.
This whole story blew my mind. The High Strung are a fantastic little rock band from Detroit, MI who were inexplicably asked to play the U.S. military base down in Guantanamo Bay. This article goes off on some wild tangents, from how they got unwittingly wrapped up in an interband rivalry with the official U.S. Army cover band, bunked with a Christ-obsessed interrogator named “Marcus,” and drank cheap island rum within spitting distance of Khalil Sheikh Mohammed’s detention center.
